Galen's Scarf
The scarf is really quite simple, and may be knitted with or without cables.
Needed:
US size 9 needles
Cable needle or double-pointed needle of roughly the same size
2 skeins worsted weight yarn
Tapestry needle to weave in ends
Crochet hook for fringe
Directions:
Cast on 30 stitches.
Row 1: K3, P2, K1, P6, K1, P4, K1, P6, K1, P2, K3.
Row 2: K5, P1, K6, P1, K4, P1, K6, P1, K5.
Repeat these two rows 5 times (total of 10 rows), then work Row 1 once more (11 rows).
Row 12: K5, P1, cable 3 to the back, P1, K4, P1, cable 3 to the front, P1, K5.
Repeat these 12 rows until scarf is desired length (5 to 6 feet is usually ideal), ending with Row 11. Bind off, weave in ends. Fringe may be added.
Cable Instructions:
Cables are simple and make knitting a long scarf more interesting.
To cable 3 to the back, slide the first 3 stitches on your left needle onto a cable or double-pointed needle and let it hang down behind your work. Knit the next 3 stitches, pulling them tight over the gap, and then knit those backward dangling cable stitches. It may be awkward and require a bit of tugging to settle them, just be careful not to drop any stitches.
To cable 3 to the front, slide the first 3 stitches on your left needle onto the cable needle and let it hang down in front of your work. Now knit the next 3 stitches on the left needle and then the 3 stitches off that dangling cable needle.
The next couple of rows will smooth out the cabled stitches, and the scarf will have two long lines of opposite spiraling cables. You may also knit this scarf without the cables, simply repeating rows 1 and 2 until it is long enough. This will create a textured vertical stripe pattern.
Fringe: Cut 48 segments of yarn, 9 inches long each. Divide them into groups of four. Folding each group in half, insert a crochet hook through the WRONG side of the scarf, just above the cast off edge, and pull the yarn to make a loop. Slip the ends through the loop and pull it tight. Space six bunches of four on each end of the scarf.
