Galen's Hat
Materials:
US #10 ½ circular needles, 16" long
US #10 ½ double-pointed needles
1-2 skeins bulky weight yarn, or use 2 strands of worsted weight, held together throughout.
Directions:
Cast on 64 stitches. Place marker and join for knitting in the round, being careful not to twist. Knit in K2 P2 rib for 6", then begin decreases.
Row 1: (K 2 together, P2) repeat to end of round.
Row 2: (K2tog, P2) repeat.
Row 3: (K1, P1) repeat.
Row 4: (K1, P1) repeat.
Row 5: K2tog all the way around.
Continue working Row 5 until you have 8 stitches left. Cut yarn, leaving an 8" tail. Thread the tail through a tapestry needle and slide the needle through the stitches, slipping them off the knitting needle as you go. Draw the stitches tight, weave in ends.
To stripe: cast on with contrasting color, knit with main color for 1", switch to contrasting color for 1", main color for 1", contrasting color for 1", now finish hat in main color.
To knit flat: Cast on stitches onto a straight needle and work as directed knitting in the round. When you have decreased to 8 stitches, cut yarn leaving a 20" tail, draw through stitches and pull tight. Now use tail sew back seam using mattress stitch and weave in ends.
