Yee-HAW!
@
01:52 PM
So far today, I have posted two blogs that have disappeared into the ethosphere, never to be seen again. One here, one on MySpace. I'm becoming very annoyed. VERY.
Here we go again:
This Saturday, for those of you who may not have heard, is the big launch party for Rapunzel's Revenge. If you are not a Shannon Hale fan, and don't know, it is a graphic novel co-written by her and her husband Dean, and illustrated by our good friend Nathan Hale. It is AMAZING, and to give it an equally amazing launch, there will be a big party at the Anderson Library in Salt Lake City. There will be live music, and games, a panel and signings by not just all three Hales, but also yours truly, plus James Dashner, Sara Zarr, Kimberly Heuston, and Ann Cannon.
Not only that, but it is a Western-themed party, and so this is your one and probably only chance to see me WEAR COWBOY BOOTS! That's right, I own cowboy boots! I inherited them from my grandfather, and they are very cool. I just, you know, don't really wear that type of thing. But this is a special occasion, so I'm breakin' out the boots, people. Bring cameras.
Check out the crazy scene Saturday, August 23rd, starting at 1 pm. The Anderson Library in Salt Lake City, with books provided by The King's English!

The Swedish Chef Sings Carmen
@
02:53 PM
I don't normally direct people who might be young and impressionable to YouTube . . . but oh, my golly!
There is a clip on YouTube of The Muppets' Swedish Chef and Beaker singing "Habanera" from the opera Carmen. After the first three seconds, I was laughing so hard I couldn't see. So here's the link, use it responsibly:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDFgtFXfnv0
You can thank me later, if you don't die of laughter. I don't know what it is, perhaps the dramatic way they both appear onscreen . . . I can't get enough!
"Bork, bork-bork-bork! Bork, bork-bork-bork!"
"Me me me, memememe memememe. . . . "
I can't stand it!
The other YouTube video I can't get enough of (and neither can Boy, he wants to watch it every day) is the Misheard Numa Numa Lyrics. Now, some of you may be familiar with the Numa Numa Guy. A few years back, when weirdo video clips first started circulating on the internet and being relentlessly forwarded via email, this chubby guy named Gary Brolsma became wildly popular for lip-synching this song into his webcam. The song, "Dragostea O Din Tei" is in Hungarian (? Romanian? Actually, not sure. . . .), something which seems to have escaped the average viewer. All anyone knows for sure is that the chorus contains the words "Numa Numa", hence the nickname for the song. Having watched Gary rock out to this song a number of times, I was well aware that whatever he was singing, it was not English. But a large number of people seem to think that it is, and have "figured out" the words. Someone has now taken the misheard lyrics and illustrated them using stick men and photographs. They are hilariously incoherent, and you wonder what kind of person thought he was saying, "Raise a fresh pear! No my no my A!"
Because all good pop songs contain a reference to farming, right?
So, yes, I should be working hard on a couple of manuscripts, but instead I'm watching stick men act out misunderstood Hungarian pop songs, and Beaker and the Chef do Verdi.
Fine, I'll get back to work! Slave drivers!
But let me also point everyone to the "Meet Jessica" page, where there are shiny new events posted, two of them for this week. So if you live in or around southern Utah, come and see me!

Jessica Recommends. . . . Plus: the World's Most Frequently Asked Question!
@
02:22 PM
Many, many years ago when I started this blog, I used to regularly do a "Jessica Recommends" blog where I listed all my most recently read books that I've liked. Most of you will not remember this, due to the fact that pretty much no one read this blog before I ever had a book out! (Don't feel bad, reading random people's blogs is not that interesting.) But I feel that lately I have been lapse in recommending books, and so let me through a couple out there.
Jessica Recommends:
Out of the Wild, by Sarah Beth Durst (the sequel to Into the Wild, which I also cannot recommend enough)
The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain, by Peter Sis
Angle of Repose, by Wallace Stegner
Wizards at War, by Diane Duane
Suite Scarlett, by Maureen Johnson
And I'm currently reading The Black Tattoo, by Sam Enthoven, and really enjoying it.
Actually, I'd just like to take this opportunity to endorse anything by Maureen Johnson. Maybe I shouldn't since I've only read three of her books, but I'm guessing from those three that all her books are phenomenal. I have LOVED Devilish, Suite Scarlett, and 13 Little Blue Envelopes, and look forward to reading her three others, The Bermudez Triangle, The Keys to the Golden Firebird, and Girl at Sea.
And now for the World's Most Frequently Asked Question!
I bet you were thinking it was: What is the answer to life, the universe, and everything? But we all know the answer to that is 42. That was settled years ago. (Thanks, Douglas Adams!)
Judging from the emails I get daily, the World's Most Frequently Asked Question is:
Will you write another dragon book?
The answer is: Yes.
Also, the rough draft is done. Finished. You may email me your plot ideas all you like, but I'm afraid I do not need them. Also, you may speculate away, but I'm afraid I will not be giving out any spoilers. I will not tell you if there is a wedding, any dragon eggs hatching, or any major deaths.
Nope.
Nuthin'.
All right, now I feel bad.
Here's your hint:
Volcano.
